A Child-led approach to education
How do we support education at Wayfinders?
At Wayfinders, we support education by helping each person understand where they are in their educational journey, like finding out what kind of tree they are and how they are growing.
When someone is thriving, we give them space, just as nature does. When someone is struggling, we offer support and tools to help them grow in the direction they’re exploring.
We are bringing back what education is. Our approach may feel different from traditional methods, but everything we do is designed to nurture individual growth. Education is everywhere in nature, in people, in culture and in everyday experiences.
It is not limited to classrooms or textbooks it is the lifelong nourishment that allows every person to grow into their fullest shape.
Like trees:
some grow quickly
some grow deeply
some grow slowly and steadily
some grow through storms
some grow together
some grow alone
We believe the purpose of education is to nurture the unique growth of every individual. Like trees in a vast landscape, people grow at different speeds, in different shapes, and through different conditions.
At Wayfinders, education is understood as something much broader than academic learning alone. It includes formal learning, lived experiences, cultural understanding, personal discovery and everyday curiosity. Together, these experiences help children develop direction, resilience, confidence and identity.
We believe education is not something that is “done to” a child, but something that unfolds through experience, connection and exploration. Because of this, learning is present in everything we do in conversation, in play, in nature, and in moments of discovery.
Without education, growth cannot happen. But education is not limited to one system or one method. Every child learns, adapts and evolves, and our role is to support the kind of learning environment that allows them to do this in a way that feels natural, safe and meaningful for them.
The Silver Birch shoots upward rapidly when placed in rich soil.
This represents people who thrive when given strong, structured educational environments. With consistent support, they grow quickly and confidently toward their goals. Education here is seen as rapid, upward growth.
The Oak Tree grows from roots that may be centuries old, storing the memory of the land. This symbolises intergenerational education traditions, cultural wisdom, storytelling, and values passed down. These roots give stability, grounding, and identity. Education here stems from deep cultural and familial knowledge.
